Strong Engagement in the SOS2LearnDBS Call for Community‑Led Actions
A Regional Response for Water Stewardship and Community‑Driven Impact
The SOS2LearnDBS project recently concluded its Call for Community-Led Actions, attracting 91 applications from diverse local actors across the Danube River Basin and beyond. These applications represent a wide range of ideas and initiatives focused on sustainable water stewardship, community-driven restoration, and innovative solutions to local water challenges.
The applicants hailed from various regions within the Danube River Basin, including the Black Sea, Middle Danube, Lower Danube, and Upper Danube regions. These areas are of significant environmental, cultural, and economic importance, and the initiatives reflect the interconnected nature of the basin’s water systems. The projects submitted cover a broad spectrum of topics, such as marine litter reduction, wetland restoration, water quality improvement, and biodiversity conservation.
Of the 91 applications, approximately 30 projects are based in the Black Sea region, which highlights the pressing need for marine conservation and pollution management in this area. Around 25 projects focus on the Middle Danube, addressing challenges related to water pollution, ecosystem restoration, and local community involvement. The Lower Danube and Upper Danube regions account for the remaining applications, with many initiatives focusing on the protection of river ecosystems, sustainable agriculture, and cross-border cooperation.
These projects reflect a wide range of applicants, including NGOs, local governments, research institutions, universities, and private sector entities, all contributing unique perspectives and expertise. The SOS2LearnDBS initiative is particularly focused on fostering locally tailored approaches to water management that can be replicated across borders, ensuring long-term sustainability and resilience in the face of climate change.
The Danube Basin, as one of Europe’s most interconnected freshwater systems, plays a crucial role in the environmental health of the region. It spans across 19 countries and covers a drainage area of over 800,000 square kilometers, making it essential for millions of people who depend on its resources. The projects targeting sustainable water restoration and community-led actions are key to ensuring the long-term health of the basin and its surrounding ecosystems.
As the review process continues, the diversity and quality of the applications reinforce the SOS2LearnDBS mission, aligned with the EU Mission Ocean’s goal of restoring Europe’s oceans and waters by 2030. These community-driven solutions are vital in addressing the pressing environmental challenges faced by the region. The submitted projects demonstrate a strong commitment to enhancing water stewardship and fostering collaborative action to improve local ecosystems, contributing directly to the broader objectives of the EU Mission Ocean in promoting sustainable water management and resilience across Europe.
We appreciate all the applicants’ efforts and eagerly anticipate the selection of projects that will be implemented in the coming months. The successful initiatives will serve as models for other regions and demonstrate the power of community involvement in water management.
The Call for Community‑Led Actions was open from 27 November 2025 to 30 March 2026 (17:00 CET), and after eligibility checks and evaluation phases running from April to June 2026, the results of the selection are planned to be announced in July 2026. Following the announcement and contractual procedures with successful applicants, the funded actions are expected to start implementation in September 2026.
Stay tuned for further updates on the selected actions and upcoming opportunities for engagement.
