SoS2LearnDBS

Clean Waters, Thriving Ecosystems

Powered by Communities

Through collaborative efforts, we seek to enhance ecosystem health and resilience by restoring natural water systems and promoting biodiversity of the Danube River Basin and the Black Sea region.

The project

SoS2LearnDBS is dedicated to restoring the ecosystems of the Danube River Basin and the Black Sea region through the active participation of local communities. The project aligns with the European Union’s “Restore our Oceans and Waters” Mission, which focuses on revitalising aquatic ecosystems, including seas, oceans, and freshwater bodies, through research, innovation, and active citizen involvement.

SoS2LearnDBS seeks to empower local stakeholders with the tools, knowledge and support to implement sustainable water management practices, thus contributing to the protection and restoration of freshwater and marine ecosystems. The initiative combines innovative, nature-based solutions with community engagement to foster a collaborative approach towards environmental sustainability.

Objectives

To enhance community capacity and participation in restoration activities by developing and implementing tailored capacity-building programs.

To develop scalable and replicable environmental restoration models that can be adapted to different regions and community contexts.

To foster the integration of traditional ecological knowledge with modern scientific methods in restoration practices.

To ensure the long-term sustainability and ethical inclusivity of restoration efforts through continuous community involvement and protection of cultural heritage.

To establish and maintain robust technical assistance and support networks to facilitate the successful implementation
and monitoring of community-led restoration actions.

Target Groups

Academia

e.g. universities and other research institutions; students involved in water restoration studies

Industry

e.g. local businesses, particularly in the blue economy sector

Government

e.g. regional and local authorities responsible for implementing water management policies

Civil Society

e.g. local communities, NGOs, and citizens engaged in participatory restoration efforts and water conservation initiatives

How you can get involved

SoS2LearnDBS relies on the active engagement of local communities and stakeholders. We invite organisations to submit their proposals for Community-Led Actions and Transition Agendas through our calls for funding. Whether you are a community group, a local authority, or an organisation with innovative solutions for environmental challenges, you can contribute to shaping the future of the Danube River Basin and the Black Sea region!

Activities

One of the core elements of SoS2LearnDBS is its integration with ongoing EU initiatives aimed at restoring oceans, seas, and freshwater ecosystems. The project will closely follow and contribute to key EU frameworks, including:

By linking community-led actions and transition agendas with these EU frameworks, the project ensures that local solutions are not only impactful on the ground but also contribute to larger EU-wide restoration and sustainability goals.

The support for developing Transition Agendas will proceed as follows:

  • Open Calls for Proposals:

Two open calla will be launched to invite proposals focused on developing Transition Agendas. These agendas should be strategic plans that guide communities and sectors towards sustainable practices in the long term, focusing on areas such as water management, biodiversity restoration, and circular economy in the Danube River Basin and the Black Sea region.

  • Selection and Financial Support:

The selected proposals for Transition Agendas will also receive financial support to develop and implement their strategies. The funding will help communities create actionable and realistic transition plans aligned with EU policies and local sustainability needs.

  • Technical Support and Expert Guidance:

Communities selected for this call will receive technical support from experts in water management and ecosystem restoration. This ensures that the Transition Agendas are feasible, aligned with EU environmental policies, and tailored to the specific needs of each community.

  • Development of Tools and Guidelines:

Tools and practical guides will be developed to support communities in creating their transition strategies. These will include transition templates, performance indicators, and strategies to overcome barriers, ensuring that the transition plans are effective and adaptable to local circumstances.

  • Impact Evaluation and Monitoring:

The impact of the Transition Agendas will be evaluated through specific indicators that measure environmental sustainability and the social and economic outcomes of the transitions. Ongoing monitoring will allow for adjustments, ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of the transition efforts.

We believe that successful projects are those that make a real, measurable difference. Throughout the project, we will monitor and evaluate the social and environmental impacts of all activities. This will include tracking:

  • The effectiveness of Community-Led Actions in achieving environmental and social goals
  • The success of Transition Agendas in guiding sustainable sector transformations
  • The long-term sustainability of the initiatives beyond the project’s lifetime

These evaluations will not only track progress against project-specific goals but also assess the alignment with EU restoration targets for marine and freshwater ecosystems, allowing for broader insights into how local actions contribute to EU environmental policies.

Both types of support (Community-Led Actions and Transition Agendas) are designed to ensure that local communities not only develop innovative solutions but also implement sustainable practices that result in lasting changes in the Danube River Basin and the Black Sea region, aligned with EU-wide policies and objectives for environmental restoration.

We empower local communities to design and implement practical, hands-on solutions for environmental challenges, particularly in the areas of marine and freshwater ecosystem restoration in the Danube River Basin and the Black Sea region. Through an open call, we invite communities to propose their own Community-Led Actions, such as:

  • Ecological restoration projects
  • Environmental education initiatives
  • Circular economy solutions

These initiatives will be supported with funding and mentoring to ensure they are successfully implemented and deliver tangible environmental and social benefits. Communities will be at the heart of decision-making, shaping their own future while working towards a more sustainable world.

Transition Agendas are strategic plans that guide communities and sectors in adopting sustainable practices for long-term environmental health and resilience. In addition to the Community-Led Actions, the project also invites proposals for Transition Agendas through another open calls. These agendas will help localities transform their sectors, with a focus on areas like:

  • Water management
  • Biodiversity restoration
  • Waste reduction

Communities selected for this call will receive financial support and expert guidance to develop and implement transition strategies that are aligned with EU water policies, such as the Water Framework Directive and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, ensuring that local actions are in line with EU-wide objectives for restoring aquatic ecosystems.

The support for implementing Community-Led Actions will proceed as follows:

  • Open Call for Proposals:

An open call will be launched to invite communities to submit proposals for Community-Led Actions. These proposals should focus on practical and innovative solutions to environmental challenges, such as ecosystem restoration, environmental education, and circular economy initiatives in the Danube River Basin and the Black Sea region.

  • Selection and Financial Support:

After evaluating the proposals, selected community actions will receive funding to implement their initiatives. The financial support will be tailored to the needs of each project, ensuring that communities can effectively implement their solutions.

  • Capacity Building and Training:

To ensure successful implementation, training sessions and workshops will be organised to strengthen local capacities. These sessions will focus on skills and knowledge necessary for effective management of the projects, particularly in resource management and ecological restoration.

  • Mentorship and Ongoing Support:

Throughout the implementation process, communities will have access to mentorship and technical support. Experts and project partners will provide continuous guidance, helping communities to overcome challenges and ensuring that the actions meet the environmental and social goals set out.

  • Impact Monitoring:

The impact of Community-Led Actions will be regularly monitored through key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress in areas such as ecological restoration, community engagement, and socio-economic outcomes. This monitoring will allow for continuous adjustments to ensure the effectiveness of the initiatives.
